34-118.5 Explained
This body of work was generated using a rule set. Beginning in March 2021, and concluding one year later in March 2022, Julian went to the same location (34.03259°N, 118.53294°W) overlooking Santa Monica Bay most days–often multiple times–and made a photograph with 20-40 year-old color negative, as well as 4K video, always with the same ‘rule of thirds’ composition.
All of the film photographs, and most of the video clips, were posted to an Instagram page (@julianwhatleyiv). Paintings were made based on the photographs that received the most engagement. The title for each work corresponds to the date, time, and, in most cases, the compass heading that the photograph was made from.
